Private Tour: Dakar & Goree Island
At the designated meeting hour, we will pick you up from your hotel in Saly and proceed northward towards Senegal. After approximately 90 minutes of travel, we will arrive at Dakar, the striking capital of the nation.
Our first stop will be the port, where we will board a ferry to Goree Island, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you will gain insight into the island's crucial role as a trading port during the Atlantic slave trade from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
As we explore the island, we will uncover significant historical sites alongside contemporary memorials that honor the painful legacy of the past. A highlight of our visit will be the House of Slaves, distinguished by its vibrant pink exterior that conceals a harrowing history within. You will learn about the grim era when this establishment functioned as both a prison and a market for enslaved Africans.
Afterward, we will navigate the island's narrow pathways, taking in the charm of its colonial architecture. Here, you will have time to indulge in some traditional cuisine at a local restaurant (meal cost not included).
Once you've enjoyed a delicious meal, we will return via ferry to Dakar. In the city, a captivating walking tour awaits, showcasing all the must-see attractions. Our first destination is Independence Square, which serves as the vibrant core of the historic district. The surrounding structures provide a glimpse into the luxurious past of the 1940s and 1950s.
Next, we will view the impressive Presidential Palace, followed by a visit to the lively markets of Kermel and Sandaga, as well as the artisan booths at Soumbedioune. One can't miss seeing the monumental African Renaissance Monument, renowned as the continent's tallest sculpture, which is often a topic of much debate.
In the concluding segment of our excursion, we will visit the Medina district, featuring the stunning Grand Mosque and the vibrant Tilene market, where Shamans offer a range of charms and amulets for sale.
After a comprehensive tour lasting a total of 10.5 hours, we will return to Saly and safely drop you off at your hotel.
