We will convene at the designated meeting point located at Rua de São Filipe Nery 60, Porto, Portugal, before embarking on our journey to Amarante. This delightful city is renowned for its significant artistic, cultural, and architectural treasures that are sure to leave a lasting impression. Let’s begin our adventure!
Situated about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Porto, Amarante is nestled in the stunning Serra do Marão and perched above the Tâmega River, the longest tributary of the Douro. As we arrive, the breathtaking views from the city’s scenic lookout will create the perfect introduction to this beautiful Portuguese destination.
As we stroll through the charming streets, we'll encounter the quaint houses that adorn both sides of the river. This walk will also provide an opportunity to delve into the inspiring history of Amarante, particularly the community's valiant resistance during the early 19th century against Napoleon's invading forces.
Two must-see landmarks in Amarante are the São Gonçalo Bridge and the Monastery. It’s intriguing how the entire city seems to honor this particular saint! We’ll explore the local devotion and significance of this historical figure.
After experiencing the delights of Amarante, we will make our way back to Porto, concluding our journey after a fulfilling 8 hours.
