Fátima, Nazaré & Santa Maria da Valega Day Trip
Description
Embark on a day excursion to Fátima and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, a significant destination for Marian devotion in Portugal. You'll also have the opportunity to appreciate the beautiful church in Válega.
Day Trip Overview
The journey begins at the Monument to King Pedro V located in Batalha Square, from where we will board a vehicle and depart from Porto, embarking on a scenic two-hour drive southward.
As we transition from the urban landscape, you will witness the charming scenery of gentle hills, quaint whitewashed villages, and lush olive groves. Our primary destination is Fátima, renowned globally as one of the leading Marian sanctuaries.
Upon arrival, we will dedicate approximately 45 minutes to explore the Chapel of the Apparitions, the remarkable Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary featuring 15 chapels that honor the mysteries of the rosary, and the contemporary Church of the Most Holy Trinity, one of Europe’s largest churches. Subsequently, you will enjoy an hour of free time for personal exploration.
Following our time in Fátima, we will proceed on a brief 45-minute drive to Nazaré. Once there, you'll have roughly 1.5 hours to leisurely enjoy lunch.
After our meal, we will visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, another iconic location of spiritual significance. Here, we will delve into the history of the revered Marian image held within, along with the legend of Dom Fuas Roupinho, a tale that has been intertwined with this sanctuary since medieval times. Visitors will also have the chance to admire the ornate details of the temple and take in stunning views from the Sítio, a scenic neighborhood perched above Nazaré.
Our next leg of the journey leads us on a 1-hour and 45-minute drive to the Church of Our Lady of Amparo in Válega, located in Ovar. This stop will allow us a 30-minute visit to appreciate its stunning facade adorned with polychrome tiles in vibrant hues of blue, yellow, and green, illustrating biblical narratives including the Annunciation, the Coronation of the Virgin, and the Last Supper.
We will conclude our day back at the starting point in Porto after approximately 11.5 hours.
