Free Tour of World War II and Communism in Prague
Embarking on this World War II tour serves to honor our ancestors who lived through the harrowing times of Nazi occupation in Czechoslovakia. Our goal is to share their experiences and the memories of this tumultuous era while highlighting the true horror faced by Prague and its people during WWII. This tour represents a mission to disseminate knowledge about this pivotal chapter in history, and we invite you to join us.
Throughout this free tour, we will explore the two most crucial periods of the 20th century for what was then known as Czechoslovakia. Participants will visit significant locations tied to the World War II era, including the Memorial of Heroes of the Heydrich Terror and the historic Old Town Hall. Additionally, we will highlight sites that reflect the Communist era, marked by defining events such as the 1968 Invasion and the Velvet Revolution.
At 10 am, we will convene in front of the Malostranská metro exit. Over the course of two and a half hours, a knowledgeable guide will lead us as we uncover stories behind buildings and monuments that bear witness to a history that must not be overlooked.
We will begin by walking alongside the Vltava River, learning about the roots of the tensions between Czechs and Germans that trace back to the First World War. You will discover the motivations behind the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia while observing iconic sites such as the Maisel Synagogue and the Dancing House, a structure that has stirred debate for its unique design but is now regarded as a must-visit attraction.
Within the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, we will investigate the planning of Operation Anthropoid, a covert mission aimed at assassinating the Nazi officer Reinhard Heydrich. Members of the group will descend into the church's crypt to learn more about this pivotal operation.
As we proceed, we will encounter various key memorials that commemorate Prague's difficult history, such as the Prague Uprising Plaque, Rudolfinum, Winged Lion Memorial, and Hlávkova College.
Participants will observe the striking façade of the Neogothic Wing of the Old Town Hall before concluding our exploration of World War II and the Nazi legacy in Prague. Our journey will bring us back to the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, where this insightful free tour will wrap up at 12:30 pm.
Group Size
To enhance the experience, the maximum group size is limited to 20 participants per tour guide. This arrangement ensures that everyone can hear the guide clearly, see more throughout the tour, and have ample chance to engage with questions. We believe that this number strikes the right balance, in contrast to the larger groups of up to 45 that some tours utilize in Prague.
