The Nightwatchman of Prague: Theatrical Walking Tour
Description
Embark on an insightful journey through the Old Town of Prague, guided by a character reminiscent of the past: a 17th-century nightwatchman in authentic attire.
Tour Overview
Our adventure commences at the Powder Gate, where your nightwatchman awaits, lantern in hand, wearing a traditional hooded cloak and wielding a 2 m (6 ft 7 in) halberd. He will share intriguing details about the purpose of the halberd, the reason for the killing ground along the city walls, and the perils that lurked in the shadows of these historic streets.
As we stroll towards the Fruit Market and the Estates Theatre, our guide will delve into the flavors of medieval cuisine, elucidate the origins of the term 'pepper sack' used as a compliment, and recount the story of a young composer from Salzburg who chose Prague for the debut of one of his masterpieces.
Continuing to Old Town Square and the Týn Church, we will reflect on a significant and somber moment in history marked by the crosses embedded in the cobblestones, recalling 21 June 1621, when 27 Protestant leaders faced their tragic fate. Nearby, the Jan Hus Monument honors the reformer who was executed for his beliefs two centuries prior.
At the Klementinum, we will discuss the tale of Alexandr Schamsky, a 28-year-old who made the brave decision to remain in Prague during the plague outbreak of 1713, while most fled the city.
Next, we will descend to the Vltava riverbank, exploring the legacy of Charles IV, the emperor responsible for much of Prague’s grandeur, and uncovering the medieval city's three official fire safety rules, one of which relates to a tavern cellar.
Our journey concludes at the historic Charles Bridge, where we will share the comprehensive narrative of Charles IV, practical survival tips from the plague years, and a finale featuring a traditional horn call or poem used to alert the citizens of impending danger. After 1.5 hours walking a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles), the tour wraps up, and we exchange farewells.
