Tour Overview

There is a silver lining: the Black Death is no longer a dire threat in the air. Or at least, that’s the prevailing belief. Welcome to Prague in 1713, where the plague has made its ominous return, prompting the exodus of many physicians from the city, save for the resolute Alexandr Schamsky, a recent medical graduate of just 28 who remains unaware of the unfolding crisis.

During this theatrical plague tour, you will accompany Schamsky's successor on an exploration through Prague’s Old Town to unveil the subsequent events. Together, we’ll delve into the methods of plague transmission, identify the first citizens to escape, and understand the severity of the strict quarantine measures enforced with deadly seriousness.

Additionally, expect to experience an original plague remedy, visit Prague’s oldest functioning hospital, and conclude your journey at the Convent of St. Agnes, the site of the initial reported cases.

Highlights of the Tour

Our meeting point is located just outside the Aurus Hotel, in proximity to the House of the Golden Well, which was erected in 1715 in celebration of the plague's conclusion.

• Golden Well House: Here, you will interact with the plague doctor from the 1710 class and the dedicated civil servant of 1713. You’ll gain insight into the plague saints Sebastian and Roch, and learn why consuming three liters of garlic beer daily was once deemed a reasonable treatment.
• Klementinum: We’ll enter one of the most atmospheric courtyards in Prague, exploring the inner workings of quarantine and the chilling practice where armed watchmen confined entire families within their homes.
• New Town Hall and Virgin Mary Square: You will come to understand the distinctions between bubonic and pneumonic plague, observing the infamous beak-shaped mask designed for air filtration.
• Old Town Square: We’ll discuss the five primary causes of the plague, the accidental development of French perfume, and offer you a sample of soothing lavender oil.
• Statue of Franz Kafka: Here, you’ll discover how vital cleanliness, access to fresh water, and simple waste management were in combating the outbreak.
• St. Francis Hospital: We’ll visit the oldest continuously operating hospital in Central Europe, active since the 16th century, to explore its historical significance.
• St. Agnes Convent: In our concluding moments, we will share what happened to the intrepid Alexandr Schamsky, impart some final tips for survival, and say farewell with a poetic reflection.
