Puerto Colombia Free Tour
Description
On this free tour of Puerto Colombia, we will journey back in time to explore the historical significance of a municipality that played a vital role in the country's economic growth, serving as the main seaport between 1893 and 1936.
Tour Details
At the scheduled time, we will gather at the plaza Francisco Javier Cisneros, and once the group is ready, we will kick off this free tour of Puerto Colombia. This municipality carries a rich heritage, particularly known for its function as a gateway into the nation.
As we embark on our exploration, we will uncover its most important landmarks. Our first stop will be the Muelle 1888 dock, which was among the longest docks globally at the time, serving as a primary entry and exit point for goods and people during the 19th and early 20th centuries. We will reflect on the historical significance of this dock as we view its remnants, discussing the influx of individuals and cargo that once flowed into Colombia through it.
Next, we will visit the old Railway Station, another symbol of Puerto Colombia's commercial relevance. This station connected the port with the city of Barranquilla, and its architecture is a testament to the Belle Époque of the Colombian Caribbean, a term referring to the prosperous first half of the 20th century characterized by European cultural influences and economic development.
Our exploration will take us through the charming streets of downtown Puerto Colombia, lined with houses featuring colonial-style facades. We will stroll past local shops and workshops where artisans create unique pieces. As we progress, we will arrive at the Malecón, where a stunning panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea awaits, highlighting the Puerto Colombia Light, a lighthouse that stands at a remarkable 70 m (229 ft) tall.
We will conclude our 2-hour tour at the original meeting point, bidding farewell to the group.
