Hike Along the Viltipoco Trails

Our journey begins at 9 am, departing from the Church of Purmamarca to follow the trails once walked by the Indigenous leader Viltipoco.

As we embark on our hike, we will delve into the Calchaquí Wars. This significant conflict occurred in the mid-16th century, during which the Spanish confronted various Indigenous groups, including the Humauacas, who were led by Viltipoco. Following the collapse of the Inca empire, this leader managed to resist in the striking mountains of Purmamarca for an impressive 60 years.

As we absorb the tale of Viltipoco, we will traverse a dry riverbed, taking in the breathtaking landscapes surrounding Purmamarca. This region showcases remarkable natural beauty, and we will also uncover the geological transformations that shaped this area over the span of four million years.

Continuing through a narrow valley, we will further explore the Andean cosmovision. Along the way, we will observe the unique flora and fauna that thrive here, learning to identify various plant species while discussing their historical use as sustenance and natural remedies since the days of Viltipoco.

Between 1 and 2 pm, we will make our way back to our starting location in Purmamarca.
