Reykjavík Puffin Watching
Description
Engaging in puffin watching is an essential experience during your visit to Reykjavík. Set sail around the stunning Icelandic islands, appreciating their natural allure while encountering the thriving puffin populations that call these waters home.
Puffin Watching in
When is the optimal time to observe puffins in Reykjavík? From May to August, these charming birds migrate back to Iceland after spending the winter months at sea, taking residence on the northern islands.
At the appointed hour, we will convene at Geirsfata, number 11, conveniently located near Reykjavík's harbor. Once everyone has arrived, we will embark on a classic wooden boat and depart the shoreline, steering northwards across Faxaflói Bay, where some of the largest puffin colonies in Iceland can be found. Their striking black and white plumage can make them resemble penguins, but their vibrant beaks reveal their true identity! Ample opportunities will arise for photography and binoculars will be provided for a closer inspection of these birds.
During the excursion, an English-speaking guide will share fascinating insights into the lives of puffins. Did you know that puffins are monogamous and typically lay just one egg per year? By the end of our adventure, with the assistance of an audio guide available in five languages, you will have gained substantial knowledge about these captivating birds! Additionally, you will have the chance to spot other avian residents of the area, such as the common eider, the arctic tern, and cormorants.
Following an hour-long boat excursion focused on puffins, we will return to our original departure point.
Which Island Will We Explore?
On the day of your outing, the boat captain will determine the specific Reykjavík island we will visit to maximize puffin viewing opportunities. Depending on the tides and prevailing weather, our destination may include Akurey or Lundey. All selected islands are located a similar distance from the city and are well-known for the high number of puffins residing there.
Please note that we will not alight on any of these islands to avoid disturbing the puffins, but we will approach as closely as possible to their shores, always prioritizing the well-being of these birds.
You can find the locations of bus stops on this map. The bus will collect you from the meeting area 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.
