National Maritime Museum of Rochefort Tickets
Description
Model ships, artworks, and navigation tools await your discovery at the National Maritime Museum located in Rochefort, where the illustrious naval history of France unfolds before you.
National Maritime Museum of Rochefort
The Hôtel de Cheusses, recognized as the oldest civil structure in Rochefort, is the home of the National Maritime Museum, which offers a distinctive exhibition dedicated to the French Navy alongside the Charente River.
Visiting the National Maritime Museum of Rochefort allows for self-guided exploration of an arsenal established by Louis XIV. The displays encompass a variety of ship models, navigational gear, paintings, and numerous artifacts linked to the history of this once-important warehouse.
Among the exhibition's notable features are scale replicas of significant ships, including Le Plongeur, La Vestale, Le Royal, Le Dauphin Royal, and Le Météore.
A highlight of the collection is a detailed model of Fort Boyard, which was crafted for the 1867 Universal Exhibition. This piece vividly illustrates the architectural elements of the Napoleonic fort, situated between the islands of Aix and Oléron near La Rochelle, popularized in the 1990s by a well-known television program.
The exhibition also features items pertaining to naval health, including surgical tools and artifacts from the Naval Medical School.
Typically, a visit to the museum takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, although you are encouraged to take your time and explore the exhibition at your leisure.
