Free Tour of Rome's Mysteries & Legends
During the Middle Ages, individuals viewed with disdain—including murderers, atheists, and those in prostitution—were neglected, buried, and ultimately exiled to what has become known as the "cursed cemetery". The remnants of this historic graveyard can be found in Piazzale Flaminio, conveniently close to Piazza del Popolo: the starting point for our free exploration of Rome’s enigmatic tales.
As the sun sets, tales from the Flaminio and Pópolo districts come alive... but we are reluctant to divulge too much in writing! Join us at the designated meeting time to embark on this guided adventure through Rome's enigmas. Adjacent to these piazzas lies the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, where we will delve into the mysteries concealed within the creations of two Baroque masters: artist Caravaggio and sculptor Bernini.
Our journey continues along Via del Corso, where we will reveal some intriguing anecdotes regarding Pope Paul II. As we progress along Via di Ripetta, another papal figure surfaces: Pope Leo X, introducing a new taxation on prostitution that transformed the city's dynamics...
Women who traded their bodies for money gained considerable notoriety in Rome. This influence extended to Caravaggio, who intriguingly used a prostitute's likeness to depict a virgin! Doubt this claim? We’ll unveil this story at the church of Sant'Agostino, situated near the renowned Biblioteca Angelica.
After dedicating around 2 to 2.5 hours to uncovering Rome’s hidden narratives, we will conclude our tour at the magnificent Sant'Angelo Bridge.
