Upon arriving at this historic 15th-century settlement, our first stop will be the renowned fishing port. As we explore the surroundings, you will gain insight into its rich history and notable figures connected to the area, including the esteemed poet and politician Léopold Sédar Senghor, who served as Senegal's first president. A prominent intellectual of the 20th century, Senghor was the inaugural member from Africa to join the Académie française.

The adventure continues as we make our way to the nearby island of Fadiouth. A picturesque wooden bridge connecting the two communities leads us across to this tranquil settlement. Once there, you will be fascinated by the local cemetery, where tombs and headstones are primarily constructed from shells of mollusks. This graveyard represents a unique harmony, as it accommodates both Muslims and Christians, becoming a poignant symbol of peace and coexistence among diverse cultures in Senegal over the years.

Concluding the guided exploration of the island's cemetery, you may opt for a tranquil canoe ride back to the mainlands. Each canoe accommodates one passenger and costs €15. Alternatively, if you wish to take a leisurely stroll, we will return to Joal by traversing the wooden bridge once more over the Atlantic Ocean.

After our time in Joal, you will be driven back to your hotel in Saly. The one-hour return journey offers beautiful views of Senegal's stunning coastlines.
