Hallein Salt Mines Tour

Embark on a captivating journey through the Hallein salt mines, exploring subway galleries beneath the Salzburg Mountain that have a rich history dating back to Celtic civilization.

Tour Details

We will convene at 2 Mirabellplatz at the scheduled time to initiate our excursion to the Hallein salt mines, also referred to as Salzwelten, situated on the scenic Dürrnberg plateau.

This ancient subway salt mine has been operational for over 2,600 years, tracing its roots to the era of the Celtic tribes. Its remarkable discovery significantly contributed to Salzburg’s evolution into a prominent trading hub.

Upon arrival, we will don our miners' overalls to ensure our attire remains clean and then board the historic mine train for an exhilarating excursion through the tunnels, extending nearly 1 kilometer (0.8 mi), as well as the wooden slides utilized by miners.

Throughout the exploration, we will delve into the history of “white gold,” as salt was once termed, which became a vital source of employment within the region. Discussions will encompass the daily lives of the miners and the traditional methods they employed to extract salt rock crystals manually. Truly fascinating!

After the tour, we will return to our meeting point, concluding our adventure approximately 3.5 hours later.
