Tour Overview
Our gathering point will be in front of the Santo Cristo de la Salud Chapel, where we will begin discussing the historical context of Puerto Rico during the Spanish dominion.
The journey will commence at the Plaza de Armas, the heart of the walled city. Here, we’ll explore significant structures while reflecting on its role as a hub for public dialogue. We’ll immerse ourselves in the layout and history of the 16th century, highlighting episodes of power dynamics, resistance, and cultural evolution.
Next, we will make our way to the remarkable Puerta de San Juan, which served as the city’s principal gateway in the colonial period. This entrance, with its striking vermilion hue, not only fortified the city but also marked the boundary of the Spanish stronghold. Crossing through it, we will envision the proud footsteps of countless sailors, traders, and officials who walked this path.
Our exploration will lead us to the Cathedral of San Juan, one of the city's oldest churches located on Calle del Cristo Street. You will be captivated by its Gothic design and glimmering stained-glass windows. It's also noteworthy that the remains of the famous Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León are laid to rest here.
Winding through the quaint streets of Old San Juan, we will reach the Bastion of Las Palmas, a crucial component of the city's defensive architecture. Here, we will pause to discuss how the city evolved through encounters with pirates, colonial powers, and the passage of time itself.
Lastly, our adventure will take us to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, an architectural masterpiece and key strategic point in San Juan's history. We will admire its imposing walls set against the striking backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.
We will conclude this enriching 2-hour complimentary tour at this final location.
