Mayan Route Trip
Description
Delve into the captivating ancient heritage of San Salvador through an enriching journey along the Mayan Route. This expedition will take you to significant archaeological landmarks including San Salvador, San Andres, Santa Ana, and Tazumal.
Mayan Route Tour
Your excursion will commence with a pickup from your chosen meeting point within San Salvador. Following a drive of approximately one hour, our first stop will be the Joya de Cerén archaeological site. Here, we will dedicate an hour and a half to exploring this remarkable site, often referred to as the "Pompeii of America," where a pre-Columbian Mayan village awaits. You will gain insights into how volcanic ash preserved the site remarkably well over the centuries.
Next, we will embark on a brief 20-minute journey to the significant archaeological site of San Andrés, renowned for its intact structures. As we wander through its ancient pathways, we'll focus on the iconic area known as La Campana (The Bell), named for its distinctive shape. During our hour-long exploration, you will envision the daily life of the Mayan elite around the year 600 A.D.
Our next stop along the Mayan Route is the historic city of Santa Ana, where we will spend an hour uncovering the archaeological treasures from the pre-classical era. Our knowledgeable guide will narrate the origins of this ancient city, and we will also take time to visit the current city, with sites including Theater, Municipal Palace, and the stunning Gothic-style Cathedral.
Our journey will then continue as we travel to the archaeological site of Tazumal, located about thirty minutes away near Chalchuapa. Here, we'll enjoy an hour exploring the largest pyramid in El Salvador. While walking amongst the ruins, you will learn about the historical significance of this once-thriving Mayan metropolis.
Upon concluding our explorations, we will return to San Salvador where you will be dropped off at your initial meeting point.
