Santa Ana Volcano Hike + Coatepeque Caldera Viewpoint

On this hiking route to the Santa Ana Volcano, participants will hike to the summit of the crater and then visit the viewpoint at the Coatepeque Caldera, where breathtaking views await.

Activity Details

At the specified time, pickup from your hotel will take place, transporting the group to the starting point for the hiking route to the Santa Ana Volcano, located at an altitude of over 2,000 m (6,561 ft).

Once at the trailhead, the uphill hike will begin. The route will take participants through coffee plantations and cloud forests, areas rich with wildlife.

As elevation increases, the landscape will change, revealing more dark-colored terrain. Observers will notice fossilized lava flows creating a unique lunar-like scenery. Among sulfur-tinged rocks and occasional fumaroles exuding distinct smells, the summit will be reached.

After approximately 2 hours of hiking, the summit will unveil its lagoon of emerald green waters, an acidic formation rich in coppery minerals. Here, the experience of reaching the top includes informative discussions about its epic eruptions while admiring the valley's landscape.

The descent will take another 2 hours, after which a 40-minute drive will lead to the viewpoint of the Coatepeque Caldera, featuring the Octava Maravilla restaurant. Upon arrival, participants will have 2 hours of free time to enjoy this scenic location perched over ancient waters.

Lunch can be enjoyed here under the shade of trees, providing a well-deserved break. After a total of 10 hours, the adventure will conclude with a return to your hotel.
