Suchitoto Day Trip + Indigo Dyeing Workshop
Description
Embark on an enriching day excursion to Suchitoto from San Salvador, where you will experience an exhilarating boat ride on Lake Suchitlán and participate in an engaging indigo dyeing workshop.
Details of the Day Trip
This day trip to Suchitoto commences with your collection from your hotel in San Salvador. Once assembled, we will set off on a scenic 1.5-hour drive to our destination. Let’s get started!
During our journey, interesting narratives will unfold about the colonial heritage of Suchitoto and the efforts made for its resurgence following the civil conflict. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the charming Central Square, where the striking Church of Santa Lucía, an exquisite neoclassical structure erected in 1853, stands tall. We will enjoy a leisurely 50-minute walk along the cobblestone streets filled with colorful homes and ornate wrought-iron balconies.
After our exploration of the town, we will proceed to a viewpoint of Lake Suchitlán, an essential sanctuary for migratory birds. Are you ready for one of the day's highlights? We will visit a local workshop to participate in a 1.5-hour indigo dyeing session.
Equipped with all necessary materials, the artisan will provide us with an overview of the history behind this time-honored indigo dyeing art. You will discover how the pigment is derived from the plant's leaves and witness a live demonstration of the mixing process.
Once we're set, it will be our turn to get creative! Each participant will fold and tie their handkerchief or bag, incorporating local design stamps. To finalize our piece, we will dip it in the indigo solution, marveling as the greenish tint evolves into a stunning blue.
After the workshop experience, we will stop by a local vendor to savor some pupusas and other local treats, followed by lunch at a lakeside restaurant. Choose from meat or fish options, complemented by rice, salad, ripe plantain, a piece of seasonal fruit, and a refreshing drink. Enjoy your meal!
Rejuvenated, we will journey to the shores of Lake Suchitlán for an exciting 1.5-hour boat ride, navigating through lush, island-dotted waters. Along the way, we will select an island to disembark for an educational session about the local birdlife.
As we make our way back to Suchitoto, we will pause at a cafe for a delightful coffee before returning to San Salvador. Our 12-hour day trip will conclude with your drop-off at your hotel, marking an intense and memorable adventure!
