3-Day Expedition on the Che Guevara Route

Day 1: Santa Cruz - Samaipata - Vallegrande

Beginning at 6:00 am, we will gather at your accommodation in Santa Cruz de la Sierra to kick off our exploration. This journey will lead us along the trail of the iconic leader alongside his Bolivian National Liberation Army (ELN).

Our first destination is Samaipata, a site briefly occupied by the ELN before their retreat into the mountains to evade their CIA pursuers. Here, we will tour the Fort of Samaipata, recognized as the key archaeological site in the region. We will stroll through its ancient structures, admiring the intricate carvings of snakes and pumas that adorn its walls.

Continuing our venture, we will visit a remarkable museum showcasing artifacts from local excavations, followed by a lunch break in Vallegrande, where you'll enjoy a starter and main dish at a local restaurant. Post-lunch, we'll visit the hospital's washing place, Nuestro Señor de Malta, where Che's body was displayed after his death, along with the monument and museum dedicated to him, celebrating his impactful journey through this area. Our day will conclude with a delightful dinner and a restful night at the hotel.

Day 2: Vallegrande - Pucara - La Higuera

The second day begins with breakfast at 7:00 am before we make our way to La Higuera, the site of Che's imprisonment following his capture in Quebrada del Churo. We will follow the scenic route connecting La Higuera and Vallegrande, known as the Che route, honoring the legendary figure. En route, we’ll pause at Pucara, a location chronicled in his Diary, before it fell into the hands of his captors.

Upon reaching La Higuera, we will explore the school building where Che was held and ultimately executed on October 9, 1968. This site has transformed into a place of reverence, adorned with flowers and candles as locals pay tribute to the guerrilla striving to liberate Bolivia from oppression. After a lunch break, we will return to Vallegrande.

Day 3: Vallegrande - Santa Cruz

On our final day, after breakfast, we will begin the journey back to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, traversing expansive cactus-laden deserts. Expect to arrive at your hotel around 4:00 pm.

Extension to Sucre

If you wish to prolong your adventure along the Che Guevara route to Sucre, this option is readily available. The first two days will proceed as previously outlined, although you will spend the second night at a hotel in Villa Serrano.

On the last day, following breakfast at 8:00 am, we will set out toward Sucre, with a stop in Tomina to admire an 18th-century church and another pause for lunch. Anticipate arriving in Sucre around 2:00 pm.
