Santa Marta Churches Tour
Description
Heritage, design, and faith converge seamlessly on this tour exploring the churches of Santa Marta, where we will uncover the city’s religious significance.
Description
At the designated time, we will meet you at your accommodation in Santa Marta. Are you prepared to embark on a walking exploration of one of the most stunning locales along Colombia's Caribbean coast?
Our journey begins at the San Juan de Dios Chapel, an exquisite colonial-style church established in 1746, recognized as one of the most esteemed churches in Santa Marta. Be sure to find out the reasons behind its celebrated status!
Next, we will visit the old Capuchin Monks convent, constructed in the 18th century in a Baroque architectural style. This monastery features a magnificent central courtyard, where we’ll explore its historical symbols and learn of its past significance as an influential center for education and religious gatherings during colonial times.
Our following destination will be the San Francisco de Asís Church, recognized as a National Monument. This structure has endured considerable challenges, including earthquakes and pirate invasions, and has even served as a women's prison in its history!
We will then proceed to the principal religious edifice in the city, the Santa María Cathedral Basilica. This site is acknowledged as one of the oldest churches in Latin America. Inside, we will admire its beautiful stained glass windows while delving into its rich historical narrative. Notably, it once housed the remains of Simón Bolívar before they were relocated to Venezuela.
Finally, we will make a brief stop at the Santa María Bishops House. After approximately 1.5 hours, we will conclude our tour, returning you to your respective hotels.
