Tour Overview

Day 1: Santa Marta

Welcome to the Colombian Caribbean! Upon your arrival at Santa Marta, our team will greet you at Simón Bolívar International Airport and transport you to your hotel located in the historic district, where you'll be staying for the first three nights.

Later in the afternoon, we will embark on a guided city tour, taking you to the Parque de los Novios. Here, you will hear fascinating local tales and traditions that will enrich your understanding of the coastal area. Santa Marta served as a muse for Gabriel García Márquez, who described it as the most beautiful bay in the Americas and featured it in some of his literary works.

As your first day concludes, you will have free time to explore Santa Marta's nightlife and enjoy dinner at your leisure.

Day 2: Santa Marta – Tayrona National Park – Santa Marta

Day two is dedicated to discovering one of Colombia’s premier natural sites. A short 30-minute drive from Santa Marta brings us to Tayrona National Park, a sanctuary of biodiversity where lush jungle meets the sea.

We will traverse trails for approximately 2 to 3 hours amidst dense tropical foliage, with chances to glimpse monkeys, iguanas, and various birds. Stunning beaches like Arrecifes will line our route, leading us to the renowned Cabo San Juan del Guía. Here, you’ll pause to unwind, dine, swim in refreshing waters, and capture photographs from breathtaking vantage points.

Following our exploration, we will return to Santa Marta, granting you time for dinner on your own.

Day 3: Santa Marta – Minca – Santa Marta

With breakfast completed, we’ll venture about 45 minutes inland to the mountainous region of Minca, a charming spot nestled in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, recognized as Colombia’s ecological capital. Are you ready for the adventure?

Our visit to Minca includes a tour of a coffee and cacao farm, where you’ll uncover the processes behind these beloved products. Following this, there's an opportunity to refresh in natural rivers and waterfalls before embarking on a scenic walk perfect for birdwatching. We will conclude our Minca excursion with a delightful rural lunch.

With renewed vigor, we’ll head back to Santa Marta for your overnight stay.

Day 4: Santa Marta – Aracataca – Barranquilla

Today we plunge into the world of “Gabo.” Our first stop is Aracataca, the birthplace of the writer and the inspiration for Macondo. After a nearly 2-hour journey, we will arrive and walk through the streets that influenced García Márquez, plus visit his House Museum, which immerses you in the narrative of One Hundred Years of Solitude. Before departing, enjoy a traditional lunch.

Once we've soaked in the atmosphere of magical realism, we’ll continue our journey for another 2.5 hours to Barranquilla, widely known as Colombia’s “Golden Gate.” To cap off our day, we’ll enjoy a festive chiva rumbera ride along the Gran Malecón del Río, filled with music and dancing along the river’s edge.

That evening, you’ll check into your accommodations in Barranquilla, where you will spend the next two nights.

Day 5: Barranquilla

On the fifth day, we're set to explore the spirit of Barranquilla. A comprehensive city tour awaits as we visit iconic spots such as the historic El Prado neighborhood, stop by the Casa del Carnaval, take photos at the notable Shakira Monument, and view “La Ventana al Mundo,” a hallmark of modern Barranquilla.

Did you know that Gabriel García Márquez spent significant periods of his life in Barranquilla? The famous Bar La Cueva served as one of his favored meeting spots with the Grupo de Barranquilla, where intellectual dialogues flourished.

After our tour, you'll have the afternoon free for lunch and exploration at your own pace. We suggest visiting the Caribbean Museum or joining a culinary tour to relish local delicacies like arepa de huevo and butifarra soledeña.

Day 6: Barranquilla – Cartagena de Indias

On day six, we embark on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to magnificent Cartagena de Indias. Along the way, there’s an opportunity for a unique experience: a therapeutic mud bath in the Totumo Volcano.

Upon reaching Cartagena, you will have free time for lunch and to settle into your historic district accommodation. Can you sense the magic of its colonial architecture already? As evening falls, we invite you to join another chiva rumbera, a festive party bus, for a spirited tour with Caribbean music. We’ll explore the historic center, Getsemaní, and Bocagrande, pausing for excellent photo opportunities.

After this vibrant outing, we say farewell for the evening, allowing you to enjoy dinner on your own and rest.

Day 7: Cartagena de Indias

On the seventh day, we’ll delve deeper into Cartagena, the “walled jewel.” Our itinerary includes visiting San Felipe de Barajas Castle, the key military fort from the colonial era, as well as significant sites like the Old Shoes Monument and Cerro de la Popa. The walking tour through the historic center will guide you to the Clock Tower and the artistic Getsemaní neighborhood, famous for its vibrant street art. This city played a significant role in García Márquez’s narrative landscape, inspiring works such as Love in the Time of Cholera.

In the afternoon, you will have free time again for lunch and continued exploration. You might opt to unwind at Bocagrande Beach or go shopping at Las Bóvedas.

Day 8: Cartagena de Indias

After breakfast, we'll check out around 11 am, giving you time for final shopping and a leisurely walk around Cartagena. At the designated time, we’ll reconvene and take you to Rafael Núñez International Airport for your departure flight.

Accommodation Information

This itinerary includes a total of 7 nights’ accommodation with breakfast provided in a selection of 3- and 4-star hotels:

• Santa Marta (3 nights): Casa de Monny, Zamay, Hotel Boutique Jardín, or a comparable option
• Barranquilla (2 nights): Atrium Plaza, Caribe Plaza, Caribe Princess, Hotel Génova, or a comparable option
• Cartagena de Indias (2 nights): Hotel Playa Norte, Casa Crespo Beach, Hotel Altamar, or a comparable option

Children aged 3 and under can stay free of charge if sharing a bed with adults. If you prefer an extra bed for them, the adult rate will apply.

Important: Flights

Please note that for participation in the guided tour on the first day, your flight must land at Santa Marta airport before 12 pm. Late arrivals will miss the Parque de los Novios tour.

On the final day, we will be ready to transport you to the Cartagena airport at your convenience. To ensure a smooth departure, we will drop you off at least 3 hours prior to your flight. However, be advised that the latest check-out at the hotel is 11 am. Therefore, you can either wait in the lobby or spend time exploring Cartagena, leaving your luggage in the hotel storage area.

Itinerary Adjustments

Be aware that if Tayrona National Park is closed for maintenance, we will shift our visit to the Tayronaka Indigenous Reserve and the Don Diego River in the vicinity. The transfer will take about 1.5 hours from Santa Marta.

During this visit, we will learn about the daily experiences of the indigenous community through the stories shared by a community leader. Additionally, you'll visit the ceremonial house and have free time to enjoy a traditional lunch. After recharging, we will travel to the Don Diego River for a tubing adventure in a lush tropical landscape. Afterward, we’ll relax on the beach before returning by boat to our starting point and heading back to Santa Marta.
