Tour Overview

We’ll convene at the specified time in the plaza situated in front of the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, a significant landmark in Santiago, Chile. To commence the tour, we will discuss the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, established by the United Nations in 1948, which serves as the guiding theme throughout our exploration.

As we enter the museum, we will navigate through the reception areas including a specialized bookstore, before proceeding to one of the most intriguing exhibits on the first floor: a global map illustrating the nations that have implemented official Truth and Reconciliation processes.

On this same level, we will observe a Chilean map adorned with numerous crosses that symbolize the detection centers, torture locations, and political prisons utilized during the dictatorship.

The exploration will advance to the next floor, where we will delve into one of the pivotal events of modern Chilean history: the dismantling of democracy. Utilizing documents, photographs, radio broadcasts, and audiovisual content, we will trace a precise timeline of the occurrences on September 11, 1973, reconstructing the coup d'état that terminated the constitutional governance of President Salvador Allende.

We will also examine the historical significance of esteemed locations such as Londres 38, Villa Grimaldi, alongside other clandestine detention facilities operated by the oppressive regime. Additionally, as we navigate through the museum’s corridors, we will witness the response of the international community to reports regarding human rights abuses in Chile.

To explore the broader context, next we will investigate the international dimensions of repression through an examination of Operation Condor, which reflects the collaboration among various South American dictatorships to target political dissidents across national borders.
