Santoña Guided Tour
Description
Experience the charm of Santoña, a delightful town located on Spain's northern coastline, through this informative guided exploration. Uncover the intriguing history of this Cantabrian locale while visiting key landmarks such as its bustling fishing port and the auction hall for seafood. A highlight of the tour includes a tasting of the region's celebrated anchovy.
Tour Overview
The journey begins at the Monument to Juan de la Cosa, an eminent navigator and cartographer hailed as one of Santoña's most notable figures. As we walk along the scenic Paseo de Pereda, which parallels the breathtaking Cantabrian coastline, you'll learn about his remarkable life and significant contributions. At the avenue's terminus, gaze upon the impressive Fort of San Martín, a critical defense point during the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th century.
In close proximity, we’ll encounter another artistic tribute dedicated to the local carnival, recognized as a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest! Following this, we'll share fascinating insights about the Torre de la Aguada, a historical water reservoir that catered to the steamship services in the early 1900s.
As we admire the marine vistas, insights into the town's fishing heritage will unfold, unveiling terms such as secadero and tintero. You’ll gain an understanding of the rich context behind these expressions!
Our exploration will also take us to the renowned Plaza de Toros de Santoña, a bullring situated near the port and the Fish Auction Hall. The final leg of our tour leads us to the fishing port, where we will delve into the town's extensive fishing legacy and its role as a cornerstone of the local economy, spotlighting the celebrated Cantabrian anchovy.
Inside the port, we will take a closer look at the auction room, where the fresh catch is traded directly from the sea.
Our tour concludes at the shop of Conservas Nuevo Libe, proud recipients of the 2025 best anchovy prize, where you will have the opportunity to taste a delicious anchovy fillet.
