Pomier Caves, Sugar Mills & Columbus Lighthouse
Description
Embark on this day excursion from Santo Domingo, where you'll explore the remarkable Pomier Caves and their intriguing cave art. The journey also includes a visit to two historic Dominican sugar mills and the Columbus Lighthouse, resting place of Columbus' remains.
Details of the Day Trip
Your adventure begins with a pickup at the San Francisco Ruins. From this starting point in Santo Domingo, we will head west. During the drive, refreshments including sandwiches, juice, and mineral water will be available for your enjoyment.
Our first destination is the San Cristobal province, where the Pomier Caves await. Here, you'll embark on a one-hour exploration of the area's exceptional cave paintings of the Antilles. Throughout the visit, you'll uncover fascinating legends pertaining to the offerings made to the Taino deities that once occurred within these ancient galleries.
Following this, we will resume our journey to the historic former sugar mills of Boca de Nigua and Diego Caballero. Recognized as World Heritage Sites, these mills represent the first sugar mills established in America and are significant components of the Slave Route.
During this segment of the tour, you will gain insights into the forced labor endured by African slaves at these sites, as well as their courageous acts of resistance.
After our visit, you'll have an hour for lunch before we head back to Santo Domingo to visit the Columbus Lighthouse. This site is believed by locals to house the remains of the Genoese navigator who discovered the New World.
As we conclude this extensive 10-hour excursion, our final stop will be the Plaza de España. Here, you can freely explore the Alcázar de Colón, the historical residence of Diego, Columbus’ firstborn son and former governor of the Indies.
