Cheorwon DMZ Day Trip
Description
In the deserted and demilitarized region of Cheorwon, remnants of the Korean conflict are strikingly apparent. Embark on this insightful journey from Seoul and delve into its profound historical significance.
Description
Every military confrontation brings about collateral damage and severe repercussions for both armed forces and civilians. The Korean War stands testament to this reality. Cheorwon is one of the locations that experienced substantial impacts; under North Korean governance since 1945, it was marked by numerous battles and has been gradually rebuilt as part of South Korea in the aftermath of the war. Today, military vehicles and checkpoints remain commonplace, and the echoes of its tumultuous past linger in the atmosphere.
At the scheduled hour, we will convene at a designated pickup location and commence our excursion towards the demilitarized area of Cheorwon. Here, a commemorative plaque reads, "The iron horse wants to run again". Curiosity about this phrase will be satisfied when your knowledgeable guide elaborates during the tour.
Our exploration will lead us to the Second Tunnel, a strategic excavation designed for surprise attacks on foes. This is the largest tunnel in Korea, situated closest to the North, unearthed in 1975. We will navigate through 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) of this clandestine passageway, unveiling a hidden route intended for invasion.
Next, we’ll proceed to the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, a venue dedicated to honoring the memory of those affected by the conflict and providing breathtaking vistas of the demarcation line between the two Koreas.
We will then enjoy a sustaining lunch featuring a medley of fresh vegetables. To cap off our day, we’ll head to the observatory located at the Y-shaped Hantangang Bridge, where striking panoramic views of Korea's longest suspension bridge await us.
Finally, we’ll return to the original starting points in Seoul, concluding this immersive tour lasting between 11 to 13 hours.
