The Castelo dos Mouros served as a defensive position for Lisbon during the Islamic period on the Iberian Peninsula. Following the conquest by Alfonso Henriques, Portugal's inaugural monarch, in the 12th century, the fortress was vacated by its Muslim inhabitants and a medieval settlement emerged in the area.

Once the conflicts between Muslims and Christians concluded in the 15th century, the castle and its village were left deserted until their restoration in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II. The rich historical and cultural significance of this site, including the Castelo dos Mouros, contributed to UNESCO designating Sintra a World Heritage Site in 1995.
