National Palace of Sintra & Gardens

This ticket grants you access to the refined corridors and interiors of the National Palace of Sintra. Interestingly, this royal household was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

The palace's history can be traced back to the 10th century, as noted by the Arab scholar Al-Bakri, who documented it as a residence for Arab leaders. By the 13th century, it was mentioned in connection with Denis I of Portugal, although initially, it consisted of only a few rooms along with a chapel. Legend has it that this king presented the palace to his spouse, Queen Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, making it the enduring home of Portuguese royalty.

The devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755 led to significant destruction of the palace, yet the subsequent reconstruction preserved the appearance reminiscent of the 16th century. Visitors can admire the Spanish-Mudejar style rooms adorned with beautiful tiles, the Hall of the Coats of Arms, the Hall of the Arabs, the Hall of the Swans, and the royal kitchens.

The gardens have undergone restoration by the public organization Parques de Sintra. Since 2013, the entire estate has been included in the European Network of Royal Residences.

With its distinctive cone-shaped towers, the National Palace adds to the scenic beauty of Sintra while embodying the legacy of Portuguese royalty. Walking through its halls evokes a sense of stepping back into an era steeped in power and history.
