Hike Details

Our expedition will commence with a pick-up from your accommodation in Stellenbosch. A short drive of approximately 15 minutes will take us to the entrance of the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.

Once we arrive, we'll embark on a total distance of 6.08 mi (9.8 km). The initial path is broad and well-marked, welcoming us with the distinctive fragrance of fynbos, a native ecosystem that boasts an astonishing variety of plant species, more than many entire regions. Jonkershoek is home to over 1,100 plant species, including some that can only be found here—it truly is a unique experience!

As we progress, the soothing sound of water will guide our walking pace as we trace the Eerste River, navigating through areas adorned with granite rocks that reflect sparkles of silver. The inclines are gentle, making it easy to stroll along, while small streams and shaded woodlands provide a refreshing retreat from the sun.

During the more open stretches, panoramic views of the reserve will unfold before us, emphasizing why this location is cherished as one of Stellenbosch's natural gems. After about 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking, we’ll arrive at the highlight of our trek—the Jonkershoek Waterfall.

Behold the stunning sight of water cascading down rugged cliffs into a pool of pristine water, perfect for a refreshing dip after our hike. This serene atmosphere offers an ideal moment for relaxation as we savor a snack accompanied by coffee or tea—an experience well-deserved!

Our journey will continue along meandering trails before we begin our return to the starting point. Ultimately, we will conclude the adventure with a drop-off at your hotel, having spent a total of 4 to 6 hours exploring the beauty of this remarkable reserve.
