Tour of Communist Tirana
Description
Embarking on this journey through communist Tirana, you will immerse yourself in the captivating history of Albania's capital while exploring remarkable sites such as Bunk'Art 2, the Secret Surveillance Museum, and the Ismail Kadare House Museum.
Exploring Communist Tirana
We will convene at 9 am at the entrance of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Albania, located in the heart of Tirana. From here, our exploration will commence as we trace the legacy of communism in Albania.
As we navigate through Tirana, we will delve into the narrative of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania, which governed from 1946 to 1992. Our route will take us to Skanderbeg Square, where the iconic statue of Albania's national hero stands.
Next, we'll visit the House Studio Kadare, the residence of the acclaimed Albanian writer Ismail Kadare, who faced significant challenges in his literary pursuit during the communist regime. Within this museum, insights into the life of an author who endured criticism and persecution under the Albanian authority will be revealed.
Our itinerary continues at Bunk'Art 2, the largest nuclear bunker in Tirana, now transformed into a history museum. Within its walls, built between 1981 and 1986 to safeguard citizens from potential invasions or nuclear threats, we will explore 36 intricately designed rooms that echo the past.
As we journey through communist Tirana, we will pass by crucial government structures and stroll along the main boulevard, concluding at the noteworthy Pyramid of Tirana. A brief coffee break will be enjoyed at the distinctive Komiteti - Kafe Muzeum.
Another compelling site is the Post-Block Memorial, featuring an authentic segment of the Berlin Wall, graciously gifted by the German Embassy to Tirana. Towards the end of our tour, we will venture into the Blloku area, once deemed a secure neighborhood during the communist period, where intriguing tales of the locality await us.
Our experience will culminate at the Museum of Secret Surveillance, which has served varied functions throughout its existence. It holds the distinction of being one of Albania's first gynecology clinics and was previously utilized by the Gestapo during the German occupation.
The tour will conclude at the exit of the museum around 1 pm.
