Monastir & El Jem Tour
Description
Have you ever heard that Tunisia hosts one of the largest Roman amphitheatres globally? Experience it firsthand on this enlightening excursion to the intriguing historical locations of Monastir and El Jem.
Itinerary for the Monastir & El Jem Tour
Your guide will meet you at your hotel in Tunis at 8 am to embark on a three-hour drive to your first destination: the archaeological site of El Jem, also known as El Djem, renowned for its remarkable Roman relics in Africa.
Upon reaching this ancient city, the first site that will catch your eye is the Amphitheatre of El Jem, celebrated as one of the world's most well-preserved Roman monuments and the third largest amphitheatre following Rome's Coliseum and Verona's Arena.
Once you've explored this historic venue, which could accommodate over thirty thousand spectators, you'll dive deeper into El Djem's archaeological treasures while uncovering the town's historical narrative, including its roots as a Carthaginian post. Around 1 pm, you will enjoy a traditional local lunch before continuing your journey to Monastir, situated just over an hour away.
Upon arrival in the picturesque city of Monastir, your guided tour will commence at the city center, where you will visit the Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the resting place of Tunisia's first president. The itinerary continues to the impressive Ribat of Monastir, a vast historic fortress constructed in the 8th century. From this elevated position, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, understanding how this stronghold played a crucial role in maritime control. This magnificent fort also doubled as a filming site for the acclaimed movie Monty Python's Life of Brian.
After finishing your insightful tour of Monastir, you will return to Tunisia, concluding your experience around 4 pm.
