Description

Emperor Pachacutec initiated the development of a trail across the majestic Andes mountains, connecting the imperial city of Cusco to Machu Picchu. This route has since transformed into one of the most traveled paths to the historic citadel. On this 4-day Inca Trail trek, we will retrace the steps of the Inca ruler amid the stunning Peruvian landscapes.

4-Day Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu

Day 1: Urubamba - Wayllabamba

Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in Urubamba at the designated time, after which we'll head towards the village of Piscacucho, the starting point of our trek. Our hike will lead us through the extraordinary terrains of the Andes, following the Inca Trail of Pachacutec.

During our inaugural hike, we will be captivated by the sights of La Veronica, the tallest peak in the Urubamba range. Following the path alongside the Vilcanota River, we will arrive at the archaeological site of Llactapata. Here, we will take a moment to explore the remarkable ruins perched on the edge of a grand cliff.

After exploring Llactapata, we will enjoy lunch at the village of Taray before continuing our trek to the Wayllabamba camp, situated at an altitude of 3300 meters (10,826 feet). In the evening, we’ll gather for dinner and rest overnight.

Day 2: Warmi Wañusqa - Pacaymayo

We will rise early for a nourishing breakfast before embarking on a challenging ascent. Our goal is the highest elevation of the Inca Trail, Warmi Wañusqa, which stands at 4200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level. The effort expended will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic vistas from the summit.

Once we soak in the remarkable views, we will descend toward Pacaymayo, our camp for the night, where we will dine and rest.

Day 3: Runkuracay - Sayacmarca - Puyupatamarca - Wiñay Huayna

Following breakfast, we'll embark on the longest trek of our adventure. Our first stop will be the ruins of Runkuracay, a series of enigmatic circular enclosures. We will have a guided exploration of this area, including the citadels of Sayacmarca and Puyupatamarca, highlighted by a lunch break for rest.

Next, we will continue to the archaeological site of Wiñay Huayna (meaning "always young" in Quechua), where we will discover the structures built into the steep hillsides. Afterward, we’ll enjoy dinner at our campsite before heading to bed for the night.

Day 4: Inti Punku - Machu Picchu

We will save the best for last! After breakfast, we will set off on the hike to Machu Picchu, recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Our trek will take us through Inti Punku, the gateway to the Inca citadel, where we will be treated to an awe-inspiring view of the complex. Upon arriving at Machu Picchu, we'll partake in a three-hour guided tour, exploring its enclosures, fountains, and sacred temples.

Once the tour concludes, you will have free time to wander and capture photos before regrouping for the bus ride to Aguas Calientes. From there, we will board the train for our return journey to your hotel in Urubamba, with options to conclude the trip in Ollantaytambo, Yucay, or Cusco if preferred.

Accommodation

The hiking experience includes three nights of accommodations in camping tents at the Wayllabamba, Pacaymayo, and Wiñay Huayna campsites. While sleeping bags and trekking poles are not part of the package, they can be rented on-site at the camps.
