Palazzo delle Prigioni Tour
Description
Experience a journey into one of Europe's oldest correctional facilities through a guided exploration of the Palazzo delle Prigioni in Venice, overlooking the San Marco basin and linked to the Doge's Palace. The interior of Casanova's cell awaits your visit!
Tour of Palazzo delle Prigioni
At the designated time, we'll convene at the entrance of the Palazzo delle Prigioni, situated along the Riva degli Schiavoni and adjacent to the Doge's Palace. Are you ready to embark on this journey into the historic prisons of Venice?
This tour will guide you through the palace's three levels, a remarkable Venetian structure erected in the 16th century. Interestingly, it was envisioned by the same architect responsible for the Rialto Bridge.
As we navigate the route, we’ll encounter the torture chambers and various cells, gaining insight into the lives of the prisoners. Casanova’s escape originated from one of these very cells... Curious to uncover how he managed to flee? This and many more stories will unfold during our exploration.
Your guide will share tales about the myths surrounding the 'Prison Palace', along with insights on the stringent judgments and decrees issued by the Council of Ten, which held significant governance in the Republic of Venice from 1310 to 1797.
After a 45-minute journey delving into the secrets of this ancient Venetian prison, we will conclude our tour, saying goodbye to our guide.
Maleficia Exhibition
During your visit, you will also have the chance to delve into the permanent Maleficia exhibition, which is housed within the palace and sheds light on the history of the Inquisition. Inside its galleries, you’ll discover a rich array of authentic artifacts and torture devices from one of the city’s most somber eras.
If you're interested in solely visiting this exhibition, feel free to secure a ticket for “Maleficia” via this link.
