Private Tour of Venosa

We will gather at your preferred time at the car park of the Archaeological Park of Venosa. Our journey through this remarkable municipality in Potenza province, known as one of Italy’s most picturesque villages, will commence.

Your adventure begins on the outskirts with a visit to the archaeological site of Venosa. Here, you will witness significant remnants of the ancient Latin colony of Venusia, established in 291 BC. The site features impressive ruins, including large public buildings such as the thermal baths from the 1st century AD and two domus from the 2nd century BC, notable for their five rooms and an impluvium, designed to capture rainwater.

Continuing our exploration, we will visit the Holy Trinity complex, a significant religious site comprising an ancient church and an incomplete one. While at the abbey, you will notice the influences of the Romans, Lombards, and Normans in the various structures, showcasing a blend from imperial domus to Benedictine architecture. Additionally, we'll take time to see the Altavilla tombs and learn about the adjacent Palace, Monastery, and the Early Christian Baptistery.

Our next destination is the historic center of Venosa, where the Aragonese Castle of Pirro del Balzo awaits. As we traverse the deep moat, you may choose to enter this grand fortress, exploring its square layout and four cylindrical towers. The visit also includes a glimpse at the remarkable Roman artefacts housed in the National Archaeological Museum.

The grand finale of this private tour takes place at the House of Horace Flaccus, an emblematic site that dates back to the 2nd century BC. Here, we will share intriguing insights about the celebrated poet, who was born in Venosa in 65 BC and spent his early years in Lucania.

After two hours filled with cultural insights and historical exploration, we will conclude our journey outside the House of Horace as we bid farewell to our guide.
