Tour of Villafranca del Bierzo
Description
Join us as we explore the remarkable cultural heritage of Villafranca del Bierzo, a town often referred to as the "Little Santiago de Compostela" due to its significant connection to the Jacobean Route.
Tour Overview
At the scheduled meeting point, adjacent to the Castle of the Marqueses, we will commence our exploration of Villafranca del Bierzo. As we delve into the history of this landmark, its striking facade will surely captivate our attention.
Our journey will then take us to the Church of Santiago, where the exquisite "door of Forgiveness" serves as the church's centerpiece. This special door opens exclusively during Jacobean years, granting Jubilee access to pilgrims unable to travel to Compostela for health reasons.
The Camino de Santiago plays a vital role in Villafranca's identity. We will stroll through this picturesque Leonese town, recognized as a Historic-Artistic Site since 1965, traversing the Jacobean Route frequented by countless pilgrims.
Continuing our walk, we will reach the enchanting Calle del Agua. This charming street boasts a wealth of historical structures, including the birthplace of the renowned writer Enrique Gil y Carrasco and the palace of the inquisitor Torquemada.
Our next stop is the collegiate church of Santa Maria, constructed in the 16th century on the site of a 12th-century Benedictine monastery. This monumental church stands as a significant marker along the Camino de Santiago.
As our journey concludes after approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, we will bid farewell at the collegiate church, marking the end of our enriching experience.
