Washington Monument: A Salute to America’s Founding Father

The Washington Monument stands as more than just a viewpoint; it is a celebration of the rich history of the United States. This guide will provide insights into the significance of this towering 169-meter (554.5 ft) edifice that prominently marks the skyline of D.C.

The concept of constructing a monument dedicated to George Washington, a pivotal figure in the Revolutionary War and the first president of the United States, was proposed even before the conflict concluded. The goal was to enshrine the ‘Father of the Nation’ as a symbol of the nation’s emerging democratic ideals. It was in 1833 that the Washington National Monument Society commenced fundraising for a design that initially envisioned a circular temple with columns. However, this plan was ultimately deemed too costly, leading to the creation of the Egyptian-style obelisk that we admire today.

The laying of the cornerstone took place on July 4, 1848, using marble sourced from Maryland. Yet, construction faced a significant pause of 25 years due to financial shortages and the advent of the American Civil War. Observant visitors will notice a distinction in the marble's color at approximately 45 meters (147.6 ft) up—a testament to the passage of time. Once work resumed in 1879, the marble was drawn from a different quarry.

The completion of the monument was achieved in 1884, and it received its official dedication on February 21, 1885. Upon its inauguration, it claimed the title of the tallest man-made structure globally, overtaking the Cologne Cathedral, a record it maintained until the Eiffel Tower was erected in 1889.
