Würzburg Free Walking Tour
Description
Are you ready to uncover a hidden treasure of Franconia? Join us on this complimentary walking tour of Würzburg, where we will navigate through its historic center and visit its most renowned sites.
Tour Overview
At the scheduled time, our meeting point will be in front of the House of the Falcon, which houses the city's Tourist Information Office. We will begin by delving into the history of this fascinating structure that withstood the bombings of 1945 before embarking on our free tour of Würzburg.
Our journey starts at Mary's Chapel, an impressive Gothic church from the 14th century. Here, we will discuss the significance of the Virgin Mary and the narrative surrounding the immaculate conception.
Next, we will make our way towards the Main River, passing by Germany's oldest wine bar. This remarkable location once served as a clandestine meeting point for rebellious peasants who devised their bold assault on Marienberg Fortress. Quite fascinating, isn’t it?
Upon reaching the riverbank, prepare yourself for one of the most stunning vistas of Würzburg: the majestic fortress on the hill, the historic Old Bridge adorned with its iconic statues, and the charming chapel visible in the background. Don't forget to capture the moment with some photos!
We will then walk onto the Old Bridge to learn about its background and admire its impressive sculptures, a hallmark of the city. This area is also a popular spot for locals enjoying a glass of wine, providing a great chance to discuss the Franconian wine region.
Our walk will lead us to Würzburg's two grand bishop churches, with a particular focus on St. Kilian's Cathedral, the fourth largest Romanesque cathedral in Germany. As our exploration continues, we will find one of the city's concealed gems, a quaint garden where lovers seek counsel from a medieval bard.
As we conclude after 1.5 hours, our tour will finish outside the stunning Würzburg Residence, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
