Appenzell & Hoher Kasten Day Trip

Immerse yourself in the charm of rural Switzerland on this day excursion to the village of Appenzell. Experience a visit to a local cheese factory followed by a ride on the cable car to Hoher Kasten.

Day Trip Overview

We will depart at the scheduled time from the Sihlquai Bus Station parking lot in Zurich, heading towards the captivating northeastern area of Switzerland.

As we travel on the bus, enjoy scenic views as we pass alongside Lake Zurich and take in Rapperswil Castle. Our journey will then lead us to the Appenzell hills, where we will visit a traditional farm where you can savor a glass of fresh cow's milk.

Next, we head to the Appenzeller cheese factory. Here, you will witness the transformation of raw milk into Switzerland's most fragrant cheese. A visit to the warehouse, housing up to 12,500 wheels of cheese, will follow, along with a cheese tasting experience featuring various delicious types.

After our time at the cheese factory, we will ascend Hoher Kasten Mountain via the cable car. At an altitude of 1,794 metres (5,885 feet), you'll be treated to stunning views of the Alpstein massif, the Rhine Valley, Lake Constance, and the lands of the Principality of Liechtenstein. You'll even catch glimpses of Germany and Austria! There's also a revolving restaurant at the top where you can enjoy a meal.

After lunch, we will take the cable car back down and proceed to the charming village of Appenzell. Here, a guided tour will unveil the exquisite wooden facades of the houses, richly adorned with vibrant colors.

At the end of our guided exploration of Appenzell, you’ll have thirty minutes of leisure time to wander through the village at your own pace. We will then commence our return journey to Zurich.

We will conclude this enriching 11-hour day trip with farewells at our starting location in Zurich.
