Aquileia Private Tour
Description
On this private tour of Aquileia, you will explore a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a dedicated guide. This tour ensures an in-depth experience of Aquileia's rich history without the distractions of larger groups.
Tour Details
At the agreed time, the group will meet in front of the Aquileia Tourist Information Point to kick off the private tour, discovering the historic beauty of this site.
The journey begins at the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, considered one of the finest examples of early Christian architecture in Italy. After the guide provides an overview of the tour and a glimpse into Aquileia’s millennium-spanning history, the exploration of this iconic site will commence.
Inside, guests will discover a remarkable artifact of Roman-Christian heritage, the largest floor mosaic in the Western world, originating from the 4th century. Close examination will reveal intriguing symbols, fantastic creatures, and scenes depicting early Christian life.
The next stop is the Cripta degli Scavi (Crypt of the Excavations), which contains archaeological remnants of the initial religious complex visible today, followed by a visit to the Cripta degli Affreschi (Crypt of the Frescoes), where art and spirituality converge. Should conditions permit, there is an option to ascend the bell tower for stunning vistas of the Venetian-Friulian Plain.
After leaving the Basilica, the tour proceeds to the site of the Roman Forum, where ancient columns and structures tell the story of the city's imperial past. Participants will get a glimpse into the social, commercial, and political life of Roman Aquileia, a pivotal city within the Empire.
Walking along the ancient Via Sacra adorned with cypress trees and archaeological remains, the group will reach the evocative Roman Necropolis, where discussions will cover ancient funeral rites and cultural memory practices.
After a thorough exploration lasting approximately 2 hours, the private tour will come to an end.
