Serra da Estrela Day Trip

This day excursion invites you to explore the stunning landscapes of the Serra da Estrela mountain range, renowned as one of Portugal's natural wonders.

Tour Description

At the scheduled time, we'll convene at Avenida Emídio Navarro in Coimbra to embark on our adventure through the majestic Serra da Estrela.

Our journey begins with a visit to Sabugueiro, situated an hour and a half from Coimbra. Notably, this charming village stands as the highest in Portugal, resting at an altitude of 1200 meters (3,937 ft) above sea level!

During our stay, we'll delve into the history of the Estrela Mountain Dog, one of the oldest shepherd breeds in Portugal, highlighting its significance in the region. Following this, we will continue our ascent towards the highest point in mainland Portugal.

As we travel, we will encounter several iconic locations including Mondeguinho, the origin of the country's longest river, and the town of Manteigas, known as the “heart of the Serra da Estrela” and home to the UNESCO Estrela Geopark. We will also explore the stunning Zêzere Glacier Valley and Covão da Ametade.

Upon reaching the pinnacle, we will arrive at the Tower, which stands at an impressive 1993 meters (6,538 ft) and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Here, you will also have the opportunity to sample the local Queijo da Serra, a renowned cheese from this area.

Our descent will take us past the Ski Station, as we make our way back through Lagoa Comprida and Senhora do Desterro. Finally, we will wrap up our exploration of the Serra da Estrela, returning to our starting point after a fulfilling 9-hour hiking experience.
