About the Arc de Triomphe
Legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte, perhaps sensitive about his stature, sought to project his frustrations onto others. After the French triumph in the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, he seized the opportunity to commission a grand monument, which would not only celebrate such victories but also evoke a sense of smallness in those who beheld its impressive design. Thus, the ambitious Arc de Triomphe was conceived, although ironically, he did not live to witness its completion.
Positioned at the end of the renowned Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe prominently features the names of Napoleon’s significant military achievements inscribed on its façade. Below these engravings lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, marked by an eternal flame dedicated to those who fell in both World Wars and remain unidentified.
Visiting Hours
The Arc de Triomphe welcomes visitors at the following times:
- From April 1 to September 30: Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 am to 11 pm; Tuesdays from 11 am to 11 pm
- From October 1 to March 31: Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 am to 10:30 pm; Tuesdays from 11 am to 10:30 pm
Due to security and capacity constraints, the monument may close earlier when crowded. It is advisable to plan your visit to avoid late hours. Arriving after 11 am can help you sidestep the morning rush.
Special Hours
Adjustments to opening times include:
- Every weekend, including Fridays, it opens at 11 am
- From December 19 to January 4, it will open at 11 am
- On April 17, it will commence at 1 pm
- On June 16, it will open at 3:30 pm
Noteworthy closing times are:
- July 14, during the morning
- November 11, throughout the morning
- December 24 at 4 pm
- December 31 at 4 pm
In all instances, final admissions conclude 45 minutes prior to closing.
Complimentary Admission
Entry to the Arc de Triomphe is free for these groups:
- EU citizens aged 18 to 25
- Minors under 18, regardless of nationality
Moreover, admission is free for all visitors on the first Sunday of the month from January to March and from November to December, as well as the third weekend of September.

The Arc de Triomphe in Paris is located in Place Charles de Gaulle Square.
The closest metro stops to the Arc de Triomphe are the following: Argentine and George V (line 1, the yellow line); Ternes (line 2, the blue line); Kléber (line 6, the light green line). You can also arrive by RER train at the Charles de Gaulle stop on line A.
Opening Times
The Arc de Triomphe in Paris is open during the following times:
- April 1 to September 30: Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 am to 11 pm and Tuesdays from 11 am to 11 pm
- October 1 to March 31: Wednesdays to Mondays from 10 am to 10:30 pm and on Tuesdays from 11 am to 10:30 pm

Free Admission
Admission to the Arc de Triomphe is free for the following individuals:
- Young people from the European Union between 18 and 25 years old.
- Children under 18 years old, regardless of their nationality.
Admission is also free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month between January 1 and March 31, and between November 1 and December 31. Similarly, the 3rd weekend of September is free.
