Day Trip Details
We will begin our journey by picking you up from your hotel in Salta at the agreed-upon time. Our route will take us north along National Route 9, departing from the verdant plains of Salta.
The drive to Purmamarca will take approximately 2.5 hours. Along the way, we will follow the banks of the Rio Grande River and glimpse the villages of Volcán and Tumbaya in Jujuy. Our first stop will be at the viewpoint of the Cerro de los Siete Colores, where we will spend half an hour admiring this geological mural characterized by its ochre, pink, and green veins formed from lake sediments over millions of years.
Next, we will visit the train station in Purmamarca for a ride on one of the most beautiful scenic trains in Salta. The journey will last about 1 hour, taking us from Purmamarca to Maimara. During this scenic ride, you will be treated to the breathtaking landscapes of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Upon arrival inMaimara, you will have a few minutes of free time to explore.
After our time in Maimara, we will return to Purmamarca and continue our journey along National Route 52, ascending the Cuesta de Lipán for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. We will reach the highest point of the trip at an altitude of 4,170 m (13,681 ft). Here, you will witness one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Argentina: the Salinas Grandes, where the air is remarkably clear and condors glide overhead.
You will have around 45 minutes of free time to capture photographs and take in the vast salt flats. You will observe the evaporation pools and learn about the history of this ancient fossil sea that was trapped in the Andean heights millions of years ago. It’s a truly remarkable sight!
After this exploration, we will drive back to Purmamarca, where you will enjoy 1 hour of free time for lunch. Once refreshed, we will commence our return journey, which will take another 2.5 hours. Finally, we will conclude our adventure by dropping you off at your hotel in Salta after an enriching 14.5-hour trip.
