Transnistria Day Trip

This day excursion takes you through the intriguing realm of Transnistria, showcasing two notable cities within the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic: Tiraspol and Bender.

Day Trip Overview

You will be collected from your hotel in Chisinau at the designated time, embarking on a journey northeast which includes crossing the majestic Dniester River to reach the boundary between Moldova and Ukraine.

Throughout this tour, the focus will be on the key urban centers of Transnistria. Declaring its independence from Moldova in 1990, this region experienced a challenging two-year conflict. Despite the lack of recognition from the Moldovan government and the wider European community—only three other smaller separatist areas in Eastern Europe acknowledge this independence—Transnistria functions with its own administration, law enforcement, legal framework, and its currency, the Transnistrian ruble.

Following the passport check, the itinerary continues to the town of Bender, known locally as Tighina. Here, the tour includes a visit to the Memorial to Military Glory, the historic Tighina Fortress—where King Charles XII of Sweden found refuge after his defeat in 1709—and the local train station.

The exploration then proceeds to Tiraspol, recognized as the capital of the separatist region. A panoramic journey through the city will commence, starting at October 25th Avenue, with stops at notable sites including the Stalin Empire building, former factories from the USSR era, Suvorov Square, and the local university, which we will visit on foot.

After the guided exploration, some leisure time will be provided for lunch before reconvening to travel back across the boundary into Moldova, a crossing specifically for those travelling from Transnistria. Our return to Chisinau is planned for six hours after your initial pickup.
