Tour Details
Our journey begins at the sculpture of Afonso Henriques, situated adjacent to the magnificent Ducal Palace of the Braganza. Here, we’ll take a moment to appreciate the grandeur of this historical site.
From there, we will proceed to the iconic Castle of Guimarães, a remarkable medieval fortress steeped in legendary tales. As one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, its impressive structure invites you to step within its walls and immerse yourself in its captivating history. Nestled at its base, we’ll also visit the stunning Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo, a fine example of Romanesque architecture.
Our adventure continues as we enter the historic Carmelite convent of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, which dates back to the 17th century. Notably, a century later, one of its most famed chapels, the Capela do Passos da Paixão, was established. Here, we’ll uncover the significance that has made this sanctuary renowned.
As we meander through the charming old town, we will pass vibrant locales such as Rua de Santa Maria and Praça de Santiago, leading us to Largo da Oliveira. Here, we’ll appreciate the exterior of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira and take note of the commemorative stone marking the Battle of Río Salado.
Delving into the history of this pivotal conflict, we will then stroll along Rua Rainha D. Maria II, where a delightful tasting of a local Guimarães dessert awaits us.
To close our journey, we will roam around Toural Square before concluding this 3.5-hour expedition at the remarkable Torre da Alfândega. This emblematic structure features the inscription "Aqui Nasceu Portugal," and you'll learn the fascinating stories that surround its legacy!
