Piquimachay Cave + Ayacucho Grotto Excursion
Description
Uncover the hidden gem located in the Peruvian province of Huanta with this journey to the Piquimachay cave, home to an enchanting grotto that dates back over 20,000 years.
Destination
Your expedition begins at the Plaza de Armas in Ayacucho, where we will set off on a comprehensive day trip to explore notable attractions within the Huanta province.
Our first destination is the Piquimachay cave, which boasts an impressive age of over 20,000 years. The name Piquimachay translates to "flea" in Quechua. A brief, scenic 30-minute walk will lead us to the cave, where we will delve into its depths, including the grotto uncovered by American archaeologist Richard MacNeish.
Within the confines of the cave, we will navigate its various levels. The lowest section, known as Paracaisa, dates back to the Lithic period, while other layers correspond to the Pleistocene and Archaic periods.
Upon unraveling the mysteries of the cave, we will return to Huanta, often referred to as the Emerald of the Andes. You'll soon learn about the origins of this nickname during the tour!
The itinerary includes visits to key sites such as the Plaza Mayor, Matriz Church, and the revered Obispo de Piedra. To conclude the guided tour of Huanta, we will indulge in a tasting of local liqueurs made from regional fruits like coca, lúcuma, muña, and algarrobina.
To wrap up this captivating day, we will make our final stop at the picturesque Aqocacha waterfall before heading back to your designated pickup point for a safe return to your hotel.
