Day Trip to Joya de Cerén & San Andrés for Cruise Ships
Descripción
Explore the intriguing Mayan heritage in El Salvador with this excursion to the archaeological sites of Joya de Cerén and San Andrés starting from the Ajacutla Cruise Terminal.
Excursion Overview
Your journey will kick off as we gather at the Acajutla Cruise Terminal, coinciding with your ship's arrival. Once we are assembled, we'll embark on a scenic one-hour drive. Let's set off!
As we travel, prepare to be captivated by the stunning volcanic scenery and quaint towns dotting the landscape of this region. Keep your cameras ready! Soon, we will arrive at our first stop: the San Andrés Archaeological Site. Upon arrival, we will venture into this ancient Mayan metropolis, which lies partially obscured by the ashes from the nearby Laguna Caldera volcano.
While we delve into the age-old story of San Andrés, we will walk through the temples and plazas that once hosted various rituals. Have you ever wondered what life was like in this vibrant city? Our guides will share insights as we explore the pyramids and palaces constructed from adobe, plaster, gravel, and volcanic ash. This site is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable archaeological locations in Mesoamerica.
Following our visit, we’ll proceed to Joya de Cerén, often referred to as Central America's Pompeii. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is hailed by many archaeologists as the finest preserved area in Central America. As we walk through the residences and storage facilities, we will discuss its historic significance and preservation efforts, and view various artifacts unearthed during excavation. Did you know this site was entombed under volcanic debris for nearly 1400 years?
With our explorations concluded, we will return to our point of departure, where we will part ways after a fulfilling 5.5-hour journey.
