Constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries during the Islamic rule, the Fortress of La Mota stands as one of the most well-preserved fortifications in Andalucía. Perched atop a hill in Alcalá la Real, this stunning castle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

La Alcazaba – The Military Quarter

Take in the sight of the imposing walls that encircle the fortress and explore its towering watchtowers, including the renowned Torre de la Vela, Torre Mocha, and Torre del Homenaje.

El Bahondillo – The Residential Quarter

Inside the fortified walls lies the historic neighborhood of El Bahondillo, known for its intriguing cave dwellings. Here, you’ll also discover a nevero, a shaded area designed for food and drink preservation. Visitors can view the ruins of wine cellars and learn about the significant role of wine production in this region during the Andalusian era.

La Medina – The Noble Quarter

The current Main Abbey was constructed in the Christian period atop the site of an ancient mosque. This Renaissance edifice is adorned with gargoyles and ornate pinnacles.

This area also houses the Torre de la Cárcel prison tower and the Casas del Cabildo residences, which formed the administrative and religious heart of the fortress. Additionally, remnants of the historic noble palaces once occupied by the affluent elite can still be seen.
