Guided Exploration of Almagruz Caves

At the chosen time, we will convene at the parking area of the interpretation center dedicated to the Almagruz Troglodyte Habitat Complex. Nestled in this remarkable portion of the Granada Geopark, we will encounter numerous caves that date back to both prehistoric and modern eras. Prepare to embark on a journey through time!

Our adventure commences with an overview of the important archaeological site located in the Guadix-Baza basin. Here, evidence of ancient European hominids has been discovered, making the troglodyte settlement within the Almagruz caves quite intriguing.

We will explore how our ancestors existed and examine the medieval enhancements introduced to the cliffs’ caves.

Furthermore, we will step inside a traditional farmhouse cave, known as Cortijo Viejo Almagruz. As we navigate through various rooms of this 16th-century dwelling, we will see the kitchen, bedrooms, courtyard, and other areas seamlessly adapted to the cave’s natural form.

While visiting additional caves in Almagruz, we'll dive into the themes of rural living and uncover fascinating insights about local traditions. We will discuss cheese-making, discover customs like the "matanzas," and learn about various artistic methods employed to work with materials such as esparto grass, wool, silk, and clay.

After approximately 75 minutes of guided exploration through the Almagruz caves, our tour will conclude as we return to the meeting point.
