Tenerife Vineyard and Winery Experience

After collecting you from your selected pick-up location in the southern region of Tenerife, we will journey to Finca Las Margaritas. Here, you will gain insights into the cultivation of the iconic banana, a hallmark of the Canary Islands.

During our exploration of the farm, you will discover the enduring heritage of banana farming and learn about its diverse applications, from gofio to cane sugar honey. Following our tour of the banana plantation, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a tasting of these delightful products.

Next, we will make our way to the town of Vilaflor, where a visit to the Mencey de Chasna winery awaits. Here, we will uncover the intricacies of wine production on the island, culminating in a tasting of five distinct Canarian wines that will allow you to appreciate their unique characteristics.

To enhance the tasting experience, a sumptuous array of traditional Canarian dishes will be served, featuring papas arrugadas with both green and red mojo sauce, almogrote on toast, chorizo, goat's cheese, and, of course, a delightful dessert to finish the meal.

After the meal, we will return to our starting location, completing this enriching 4 to 5-hour tour.

The Heritage of Wine in the Canary Islands

The 14th century marked the arrival of European vine varieties in the Canary Islands, brought by missionaries before Spanish colonization. By the mid-16th century, winemaking evolved into a significant industry, facilitated by British traders who exported the prized sweet Malvasia wine to Europe and America. Despite various disruptions such as wars and volcanic eruptions, the region maintained its wine trade for an impressive three centuries.

A significant change occurred in the 1860s with the invasion of the phylloxera aphid, which devastated vineyards across Europe. Remarkably, the Canary Islands remained unaffected, preserving some of the oldest grapevine varieties globally.

Today, especially in Tenerife, the Islands have gained recognition for producing outstanding wines. The absence of grafting, along with the influence of volcanic soil and various microclimates, creates a unique quality in wines ranging from crisp whites to hearty reds. Across Tenerife’s diverse landscape, from coastal areas to the lofty mountain slopes housing some of Europe’s highest vineyards, the rich winemaking tradition continues to thrive.

Harvest Period

The Canary Islands enjoy one of the longest harvest periods globally, spanning from July to November. During these months, one of the winery visits will be substituted with a tour of an aloe vera and fruit farm.
