Description
The essence of history, art, and architecture unfolds on this exploration of Islamic Cairo. Discover the remarkable landmarks of the Egyptian capital, including the Al-Hakim Mosque, the El-Moez street, and the Qalawun complex, while enjoying a variety of local street food delights.
Tour Overview
We will commence our walking exploration of Islamic Cairo from the majestic Bab al-Futuh, one of the prominent gates into the ancient walls of the city.
Adjacent to this landmark, we will explore the interior of the Al-Hakim Mosque, which was constructed between the 10th and 12th centuries. After admiring the spacious courtyard and the intricate details of its minarets, we will proceed to the Bayt al-Suhaymi, a well-preserved 17th-century Ottoman residence, showcasing its exquisite rooms and lovely courtyard.
Next, we will meander along the historic El-Moez street, known as one of the oldest streets in the Egyptian capital, often regarded as the quintessential heart of historic Cairo. This street is renowned for its remarkable traditional Islamic architecture, offering a journey back through time!
We will continue our walk down this celebrated street until we arrive at the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Barquq, famed for its stunning marble mosaics. Just a short distance away lies the Qalawun complex, an impressive 13th-century architectural ensemble. You will have the opportunity to explore its madrasa, an Islamic educational institution, and the mausoleum commissioned by Sultan Qalawun.
Our adventure will take us to the vibrant bazaar of Khan el-Khalili, where a diverse array of spices and jewelry eagerly awaits exploration. Additionally, we’ll indulge in some of the nearby street vendors, sampling local delights like the traditional zalabya sweets, the chickpea beverage halabessa, assorted Egyptian pastries, and the customary dish of rice, pasta, and chickpeas known as koshary.
After savoring these delightful treats, we will wrap up this 3-hour journey through Islamic Cairo with a visit to the Imam al Husayn Shrine, an architectural treasure tracing back to the 12th century.
