Exploring Parco delle Mura

Our adventure begins at Via Carlo Targa in Genoa, where we will set off on our hiking expedition through the Parco delle Mura Natural Area. Are you prepared to explore the longest defensive structure in Europe? Let’s get going!

Departing from the historic center of Genoa, we will make our way towards the Zecca-Righi funicular railway, renowned as one of the most ancient in the Ligurian capital. Ascending in one of its cabins, we will soon reach the city’s highest point in just 15 minutes, unveiling a stunning landscape of natural surroundings waiting to be explored.

Covering approximately 900 hectares (2,223 acres), Parco delle Mura serves as a sanctuary for various protected species. Keep a lookout during our hike—you might spot some fascinating wildlife along the way! Our route also leads us through the butterfly trail, a special area designated for the reproduction of these beautiful creatures.

Throughout the hike, we will encounter the notable Forti della Superba and the Mura Nuove, both historic military fortifications built in the Ligurian Apennines to safeguard Genoa against Savoyard incursions. An interesting tidbit: this defensive wall is the second longest in the world, only surpassed by the Great Wall of China!

To conclude our hiking experience on a delightful note, we will drop by a traditional tavern to enjoy a typical breakfast featuring focaccia and crackers.

After this fulfilling excursion, we will ride the funicular back to Genoa, wrapping up our memorable tour of four hours of wholesome activity.
