Modern Havana Free Tour
The tour commences at 10 am at the Parque de los Mártires, conveniently situated at the crossroads of San Lázaro and Infanta streets, setting the stage for our exploration of modern Havana.
Our journey begins at Hamel's Alley, a space dedicated to celebrating Cuban African heritage, featuring notable works by the artist Salvador Gonzalez. Next, we will visit the illustrious Hotel Nacional de Cuba, once a mafia stronghold during the 1930s. This venue holds fascinating stories alongside the well-known Coppelia ice cream parlour, a cherished local favourite.
Following this, we will arrive at the University of Havana campus, where the architecture evokes the grandeur of ancient Greek temples. Our path then leads us down the Avenida de los Presidentes, showcasing statues of significant Latin American figures. The tour continues throughout the Vedado neighbourhood, starting from the Plaza de la Revolución, where we'll catch sight of Che Guevara's iconic image on the Ministry of the Interior’s façade.
Next, we proceed to the stunning Christopher Columbus Necropolis cemetery, acclaimed for its exquisite funerary art. This three-hour excursion will conclude at 1 pm at the junction of 23rd and 12th streets, a notable site where Fidel Castro announced the socialist nature of the Cuban Revolution back in 1961.
